Big Churches
by David Brown

Hardly a month goes by that I don't hear someone say something negative about big churches. “Those mega churches...” they begin... and then the vitriol begins to pour. You'd think that Satan's ...

Most people go to church as much or as little as they like. For some, that's a lot. For others, it's never...or almost never. Of course it is a personal decision. No one can or should dictate your church attendance. But...just as we encourage our kids to eat their veggies because they're “good” for them...I'd like to encourage you to consider the fact that consistent church attendance is “good” for you as well! We all know that eating what you want, when you want and as much as you want or as little as you want isn't exactly healthy. So...attending church when you feel like it isn't in your best interest spiritually.

I grew up in church. I've sensed God's presence in church services since I was a small boy. I can clearly remember the Holy Spirit moving and manifesting himself powerfully during the song services, the preaching and the altar calls of the evangelical church where my family and I attended. Those were special times...moments you could literally sense the presence of God. There was something about those special times. They were somehow filled with life. That's the only way I know how to say it. The very life of God came into our midst.

It's Tuesday night. I'm sitting in Starbucks, enjoying a Cafe' Mocha, checking my Facebook and Twitter accounts. The book I'm presently reading is laying by in case I get to it. I may not open it. It's not my social networking that has my attention tonight as much as does some regular old “people watching”. People watching and people thinking. I'm thinking about people as I watch.

Going Through Tough Times

The bible word “tribulation” simply means “tough times”. We must through many “tough times” enter into the kingdom of God. Tough times don't take us into the kingdom. Jesus does. But you are surrounded with tough times. You live on a planet that's filled with tough times and so if you enter the kingdom of God, you'll walk through tough times to get there. We're connected with God...however we're not insulated from the world. Thank God, He'll help us walk through the tough times.

Some of us look for gifts, advantages, good deals, freebies...even blessings. Then because opportunities don't usually come wrapped up all pretty with a bow on top, we miss some of the greatest things God could ever do for us. We have to be careful not to miss the fishing pole while we're looking for a fish. Thomas Edison said, “Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.”

Well, it has definitely been an experience. Lacey’s two year ride with American Idol (which included a bus load of people I’ll name in a moment) was fun and absolutely intense! But then, I’ve always loved roller coasters. It actually continues even though she was voted off last week. She’s scheduled to appear in the Finale show, singing with the Top 12 at least one more time. Plus she’s still doing radio and television interviews.

Some believe they’ve spotted one. They sometimes seem a little puzzled by our lack of faith in Casper and his more sinister counterparts.

Disney released an animated film this year called “Up”. It’s about a 78 year old man, Carl Fredricksen, who ties thousands of balloons to his house, taking flight for South America. It was a lifelong dream that he’d had with his late wife to explore some exotic, far away place. One day, Carl inadvertently hit a construction worker. As a result, he was being forced to go to a retirement home, but before they can “take him in”…he lifts off and heads south. He has barely gotten off the ground though, when he discovers that he’s not flying alone. Russell, an eight year old neighbor kid is a stowaway and has come along for the ride. Together, they make the trip to a lost land where they encounter talking dogs, a bird named Kevin and an evil villain. It’s an exciting ride for the both of them and of course, everything turns out all right in the end.

Here at Victory Church, we have a high standard! That standard is Amazing! That’s right. Amazing! A few years ago I noticed that the things which occurred in the church at Jerusalem often amazed the onlookers. They were amazed by the leaders, amazed at their boldness, amazed by the miracles, amazed by the message, etc., etc. I decided that we should shoot for amazement as a church.

It had to happen if they were to stop the hemorrhaging of members to the new savvy independent churches. Ah…the American way in action. Free enterprise is awesome isn’t it?

Those who discovered, pioneered and established America just a handful of centuries ago, did so because of a dream they held in their hearts. They dreamed of freedom. Freedom has always been the true American dream. The human spirit yearns for freedom. The educated mind demands it. The oppressed life hungers and thirsts for it. Americans have enjoyed freedom for a long time. We certainly should celebrate it!
