The Soul of America

The Soul of America is...and always has been Faith in God and a Belief in the principles of His goodness and virtue.  A belief in Life, Liberty, Justice, Truth, Morality and Goodness and that these virtues can only come...from God!

The Soul of America is clearly seen in:

The Faith of our Forefathers:

  • The Pilgrims stated in “The Mayflower Compact” of 1620 that their goals were “the Glory of God and the advancement of the Christian faith.”
  • 52 of the 56 signers of the Declaration of independence were members of orthodox Christian churches.  The other 4 believed in God and that the Bible is divine truth.
  • Patrick Henry wrote these words shortly before his death.  “I have disposed of all my property to my family.  There is one thing more I wish I could give them, and that is the Christian religion.  If they had that and I had not given them one cent, they would be rich.  If they had not that and I had given them the world, they would be poor.”
  • Thomas Jefferson wrote these words in the front of his well worn Bible.  “I am a Christian, that is to say a disciple of the doctrines of Jesus.  I have little doubt that our whole country will soon be rallied to the unity of our Creator and I hope, to the pure doctrine of Jesus also.”
  • George Washinton's personal prayer book contained these words.  “Oh eternal and everlasting God, direct my thoughts, words and work.  Wash away my sins in the immaculate blood of the lamb and purge my heart by the Holy Spirit.  Daily frame me more and more in the likeness of thy son Jesus Christ...Bless Oh Lord, the whole race of mankind and let the whole world be filled with the knowledge of thy son, Jesus Christ.”
  • John Adams was not only the second president of the United States, but also served as Chairman of the American Bible Society.
  • John Quincy Adams was our sixth president and also Chairman of the American Bible Society which he considered his highest and most important role.  He once said, “The highest glory of the American Revolution was this: it connected in one indissoluble bond the principles of civil government with the principles of Christianity.”

The Words of Our Leaders

  • George Washington said, “It is impossible to govern the world without God and the Bible.  Let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion”.
  • John Adams said, “We have no government armed with the power capable of contending with human passions, unbridled by morality and true religion.  Our constitution was made only for a moral and religious people.  It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other”.
  • James Madison said, “We have staked the whole future of our new nation, not upon the power of government; far from it.  We have staked the future of all our political constitutions upon the capacity of each of ourselves to govern ourselves according to the moral principles of the Ten Commandments.”
  • The United States Congress passed this resolution in 1782.  “The Congress of the United States recommends and approves the Holy Bible for use in all schools”.

The Declaration of Independence

  • The Declaration of Independence states, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
  • The Declaration contains five references to God - God as supreme Lawmaker, God as Creator of all men, God as the Source of all rights, God as the world's supreme Judge, and God as our Protector.

The Inscription of our Landmarks

  • In Washington, D.C. there are Bible verses etched in stone all over the Federal Buildings and Monuments.
  • Engraved on a wall of the Jefferson Memorial are these words spoken by Thomas Jefferson himself.  “God who gave us life gave us liberty. Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed a conviction that these liberties are the gift of God?
  • The Inscription on the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia is taken from Leviticus 25;10, “Proclaim LIBERTY throughout all the Land unto all the Inhabitants thereof.”
  • Inscribed on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty are words of Christian compassion and hospitality.  “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore, Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

The Symbolism of Our Flag

  • Red  (signifying Bravery, Valor and the Blood that was shed to buy our freedom.)
  • White  (signifies Purity and Innocence)
  • Blue  (signifies Vigilance, Perseverance and Justice)
  • Stars  (are a symbol of the Heavens and the Divine goal to which man aspires)
  • Stripes  (are symbolic of the Rays of light emanating from the Sun)
  • There are 13 Stripes (representing the 13 original colonies who by faith founded our nation)
  • There are 50 Stars (representing the 50 states that make up America today and have pledged their commitment to our Union.)
