WONDER Part 2: Humanity
Isaiah 9:6 (“wonderful” = something great, marvelous, an extraordinary thing, something difficult and hard to understand)
Humanity
Our text states that The mighty God and the everlasting Father is also a child born unto us and a son given to us! Theologians call it the “Incarnation”.
The noted Anglican Theologian, N.T. Wright has said that “the humanity of Jesus is every bit as important as his divinity”.
John 1:1, 14
1 Timothy 2:5
1 Timothy 3:16
-
Jesus frequently referred to himself as “the son of man”. (man = anthropos (mankind) not aner (male). Jesus was not the son of a male human, but of Mary and thus the son of mankind.
-
He is called the “son of man” 88 times in the New Testament.
So... Jesus, who is God, deity, the Almighty from Heaven...became a man...fully man while being fully God!
Luke 2:52
Just as Jesus grew (developed) in stature and size...he grew (developed) in wisdom and mentality.
He also developed socially and spiritually just as he did mentally and physically.
-
Since Jesus grew physically...then he also aged.
-
Jesus experienced fatigue.
-
Jesus got hungry and thirsty.
-
Jesus was subject to sin...though he never sinned.
Hebrews 4:14-15
-
Jesus was subject to death...and did die for the sins of the world.
-
He in fact had to become one of us...to die for us...as our substitute for sin!
-
Jesus had to become a man to defeat Satan.
Hebrews 2:14-15
Did you know...?
-
Jesus never performed one miracle until after his baptism under John's ministry and the Holy Spirit came upon Him.
-
Jesus never claimed to do miracles because he was God, but because he was anointed with the Holy Spirit. (Matt. 12:28 “...I cast out devils by the Spirit of God”)
-
Jesus did all of his miracles...as a man, in a man's flesh, speaking the words of a man, touching with the hands of a man, living the life of a man, a prophet anointed and gifted by the Holy Spirit.
This is the Wonder of his miracles!
-
A man miraculously multiplied food.
-
A man healed the sick and opened the eyes of the blind.
-
A man walked on water.
-
A man stilled the storm and calmed the sea.
-
A man raised the dead.
-
A man sacrificed himself, carried his cross, took the guilt, shame and penalty of the whole world's sins and then died with it.
-
A man was raised from the dead on the third day!
-
A man ascended to heaven.
-
A man is seated at the right hand of God.
-
A man is coming again to establish his kingdom on the earth.
Jesus is both Deity and Humanity.
Deity and Humanity have been reconnected!
