Everyone should examine themselves before God.

  • Am I a believer in what Jesus did on the cross?

  • Do I trust in Jesus' blood and death on the cross alone for my salvation?

  • Am I washed from my sins in his blood?

  • Am I actively following him by faith...or have I strayed from the way of faith?

The Lord's Supper

The Lord’s Supper

Luke 22:7-8, 13-20
Jesus and his apostles ate the Passover meal.
The Passover lamb was a type of the Lamb of God/The Messiah
At that meal, Jesus instituted “The Lord’s Supper” or “Holy Communion”, an ordinance or an observed memorial of the gifts of Jesus’ body and blood for the sins of the world.

Jesus had previously taught on the subject of his body and blood.
John 6:47-63
To “eat” of something was a Hebrew figure of speech which meant “to partake of, to share in, to receive”.
Jesus did not teach that anyone was to literally eat his flesh or drink his blood.
Blood was forbidden to the Jews by Moses’ law
No one attempted to literally eat Jesus’ flesh or drink his blood at his death.
Verse 63, “the flesh profits nothing”
At Pentecost, Peter preached belief in Jesus Christ for salvation, not the observance of a Communion service in which bread and wine mysteriously became the body and blood of Christ.
To eat and drink of Jesus is to believe in him!
Just as food and drink sustain natural life…faith in Jesus’ body and blood provide and sustain spiritual life.
Just as the Passover lamb was a type/symbol of the coming Lamb of God…The Communion bread and wine are type/symbol of the body and blood of the Lamb who came and gave his life for us.

1 Corinthians 11:17-34
Verse 27 “guilty of the body” (NIV = guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord Jesus)
Verse 29 “unworthily” = (in an unworthy manner)
                     “not discerning” = (not recognizing)
Just as we should “discern the Lord’s body” in recognizing that by the offering and stripes of his body we are saved and healed.  (A Revelation of the Lord’s body)
We should discern the Lord’s body (the emblems of his body and blood) partaking of them in a worthy manner
(A Reverence for the Lord’s body)
We should discern the Lords body (The Church) treating them in a worthy manner. (A Recognition of the Lord’s body)

1 Corinthians 11:26-34 The Message
What you must solemnly realize is that every time you eat this bread and every time you drink this cup, you reenact in your words and actions the death of the Master. You will be drawn back to this meal again and again until the Master returns. You must never let familiarity breed contempt.
27-28Anyone who eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Master irreverently is like part of the crowd that jeered and spit on him at his death. Is that the kind of "remembrance" you want to be part of? Examine your motives, test your heart, come to this meal in holy awe.
29-32If you give no thought (or worse, don't care) about the broken body of the Master when you eat and drink, you're running the risk of serious consequences. That's why so many of you even now are listless and sick, and others have gone to an early grave. If we get this straight now, we won't have to be straightened out later on. Better to be confronted by the Master now than to face a fiery confrontation later.
33-34So, my friends, when you come together to the Lord's Table, be reverent and courteous with one another. If you're so hungry that you can't wait to be served, go home and get a sandwich. But by no means risk turning this Meal into an eating and drinking binge or a family squabble. It is a spiritual meal—a love feast.
