Covenant People IV

Passage: Galatians 3:15

Covenant People 4

We are Covenant People…in covenant with God…a covenant ratified by the blood of Jesus Christ!
(A Covenant relationship is unique.  It isn’t a mere friendship, acquaintance or relationship of convenience. It’s like marriage)
We’ve been talking about blood covenants, powerful agreements entered into by ancient peoples. Paul made reference to these covenants as he discussed our New Covenant with God.
Galatians 3:15 ESV
To give a human example, brothers: even with a man-made covenant, no one annuls it or adds to it once it has been ratified.
In other words, these ancient covenants were powerful, binding agreements.
Remember… a blood covenant included sworn promises. Each Covenant partner pledged to provide…
•    Loyalty for as long as they lived.
•    Protection with all of their power.
•    Provision to the exhaustion of their resources.

In 1885, Dr. Henry Clay Trumbull published a book called “The Blood Covenant” in which he described the ancient rite of blood covenant and how it applied to the understanding of Scripture and our Covenant with God.  E.W. Kenyon later wrote a book by the same title.  Both volumes relate the story of a New York Times reporter, an Englishman Henry Stanley in his search for the American missionary to Africa Dr. David Livingstone in 1871.

Galatians 3:9 NLT
So all who put their faith in Christ share the same blessing Abraham receive because of his faith.

Galatians 3:17 NLT
…The agreement [covenant] God made with Abraham could not be canceled 430 years later when God gave the law to Moses. God would be breaking his promise. [Abraham’s covenant with God was still in force…Moses’ law was a sort of addendum.]

Galatians 3:29 NLT
And now that you belong to Christ, you are the true children of Abraham. You are his heirs and God’s promise to Abraham belongs to you. [Abraham’s covenant is still in force, extended through the New Covenant that Jesus established.]
We are Covenant People!
We know that God has promised to bless us…
But what is our part of the Covenant agreement?
(Both Covenant Partners are to invest themselves into the Covenant relationship!)  What does God desire from us?
God revealed this to the Jews as he led them into the land of promised!

Joshua 1:1-9 KJV
God was giving the Jews an “inheritance”.
Inheritance isn’t given to just anyone.  It’s given to someone who is especially connected to the benefactor.

Some people wonder why they’re not blessed by God, yet they “go to church”.
But blessings come to those who live in covenant relationship with God…Not necessarily to those who merely visit his house.

1.    Covenant People are to be Familiar with their Covenant.   (Matthew thru Revelation)

2.    Covenant People are to be people of Faith.

3.    Covenant People are to be people of Action.

4.    Covenant People are to fulfill Responsibilities toward God.

James 1:25 says a covenant man will be blessed in his deed.
What are our responsibilities as New Covenant People?
Remember…We are blessed to be a blessing!

How can we be a blessing?
The Responsibilities of our covenant are summed up in…
1 John 3:22-23 KJV

Faith and Love!

•    Faith in Jesus
(Faith pleases and blesses God. If we really trust him, we will obey him.)

•    Love toward one another
(If we really love people, we will be a blessing to them)
