Covenant People I

Passage: Joshua 1:1-6

Covenant People 1

Joshua 1:1-6
After more than 400 years of exile and slavery in Egypt, God miraculously delivered the Hebrews (or Israelites) and led them back to Canaan, the land that He had promised Abraham.  It was to be their land…their inheritance…their home…and their possession!

Canaan was occupied by various tribes, one of the strongest and most warlike being the Hittites who controlled the Southern highlands!  The Hittites prayed to as many as a thousand Gods and lived perversely sinful lives as did all the tribes of Canaan.

God said that He was going to give to the Hebrews all the land of the Hittites!  [Wow! It really stunk to be a Hittite didn’t it?]

Why was God giving the land of the Hittites to the Hebrews?

What was the difference between the Hittites and the Hebrews?

The Hebrews had a covenant with God!
The Hittites did not.
The Hebrews were Covenant People.

God blesses Covenant People!
God blesses Covenant People above and beyond people who have no covenant with Him!
God will give Covenant People access to the possessions of people who have no covenant!
(Proverbs 13:22 “The wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.”)

What is a covenant?
A covenant is a binding, legal agreement or contract between two or more parties for the purpose of mutual benefit.

                   In Hebrew…“Covenant” = a cutting, a cut where
blood flows.  A compact, league, confederacy,
made by passing between pieces of flesh.
                   (translated, league, confederate, covenant,
                    testament)
