A Study on Heaven and Hell

Luke 16:19-31

Here in Scripture, Jesus tells us about a specific rich man who died and found himself being punished for his sins in hell! (The rich man himself knew his error...He had failed to repent of his sins.)
Jesus actually spoke more on the subject of hell than he did about heaven.

Three questions about hell: 

  1. Why does Hell exist?

     Jesus said in Matt. 25:41 that hell was prepared for the devil and his angels. (not for people)

  • In God's anger against Lucifer, hell was created to incarcerate and limit evil throughout eternity.

  • Lucifer/Satan convinces people to follow him to hell through temptation to rebel and sin, deception and unbelief in God. (Satan is our enemy)

  • Sin brings forth death. Ultimately, death (another enemy) will be cast into hell.

  • When Jesus died for us, he was saving us from sin, death and satan...not from God!

  • God doesn't threaten us with hell. He lovingly warns us about hell...the place Satan wants to take us. 

  1. Who will be in Hell?

    The Bible is very clear on who will spend eternity in hell.

Revelation 20:15

Let's not make any mistake. People spend eternity in hell because of their sins. There is only one way to be saved from your sins.

John 3:16-19, 36

  1. What is Hell like? 

  • A Place of Consciousness. - Thoughts, knowledge, memories, regrets, sorrows

  • A Place of Torment.

    Jesus called hell...Gehenna (the ever burning garbage dump of Jerusalem)

    A place where both body and soul are destroyed (tormented, ruined)

    A furnace of fire where there will be wailing and gnashing of teeth

    A place where the worm dies not (unregenerate spirit of man) and the fire shall never be quenched.

  • A Place from which one Never Escapes. ...and no one may help them

  • A Place of Separation from God.

    Cries for mercy are unheeded and all prayers go unanswered.

  • A Place where people come to believe in Witnessing. Soulwinning, outreach, missions (“testify”...most versions say “warn”).
